Jazz in View of WTC August 2013
There's a lot of chatter now about Mayor Bloomberg's likely 12 year legacy, pros and cons. Two clear "pros": Parks and Cycling. Under Bloomberg the park system expanded dramatically, not just adding physical park space, but culturally. August in 1990s NYC was dismal: nothing going on to relieve to the heat. Now it's impossible to savor all the events on any given summer night.
MOMA Rain Room
In hot July MOMA had an art installation in its parking lot called the Rain Room. I was quoted in the NYT as critical of it because the line had a wait of 3 to 5 hours, for what turned out to be a 7 minute, single-exhibit experience. This is a photo of me, dry, in the rain. Yeah, that's the entire gimmick -- you don't get wet.

In May 2013 I spotted another cruise ship departing, with its private fireworks show shot by the Statue of Liberty. I shot this using only ambient light. The result is grainy but sort of cool.
Striped Bass in the East River
In May 2013 Cyril caught this 38" Chilean Striped Bass off Pier 5 of the Brooklyn Bridge Waterfront Park. Behind Cyril is the World Trade Center and Lower Manhattan. I watched him reel this in, with 20 minutes of hard work. Need proof that the NYC waterfront is coming back to life?
The wild swans are back in Sheepshead Bay, June 2013, with a population growth that is shocking. Hurricane Sandy disrupted all sea life along the coast, apparently bringing to the surface things swans think are tasty delights.

James Turrell at the Guggenheim (1)
Artist Turrell uses light and sculpture to create phenomenal atmospheres. For the Summer of 2013 Turrell has rescultped the interior of the Frank Lloyd Wright iconic spiral rotunda of the Guggenheim Museum, and installed lighting that transforms the space constantly, so that it is never precisely the same from minute to minute.

A Park Avenue Question
On a church along tony Park Ave the question is whether Jesus had siblings. Another way of asking this might be, "Did Mary stay a virgin?" or "Did Joseph have children?"
Red Hook Rebounds
Nine months after Hurricane Sandy the once flooded Red Hook area of Brooklyn was on the rebound. The condos inside a 19th Century converted warehouse were reoccupied, the huge Fairway Supermarket on its ground floor reopened, and night life was booming. Picture taken from newly restored Brooklyn Crab eatery -- a must for all visitors eager for sunset views, microbrewery beers and fresh crabs, oysters, gumbo......

NYC Plans to Build a New Beach
In August 2013 the City released drawings of a new beach. to do built along the East River on the Manhattan side, under the Manhattan Bridge. The area is at this writing an ugly, inaccessible place. The beach scheme serves two purposes: Aesthetics (recreation, beautification), and storm surge protection. Since Hurricane Sandy in October 2013 NYC has learned that areas with parks built out into the water, such as the Brooklyn Bridge Park zone and Long Island City Park, absorbed surging water with minimal damage to homes and businesses.

Fireworks Over the East River (1)
I never knew the reason for this spectacular fireworks display in June 2013, but it ranks as one of the best in NYC history. For 35 minutes the rockets shot from a barge in the East River, near Roosevelt Island. I didn't care why it was happening -- it was a nonstop WOW.

The Macy's Fireworks display was shot from barges on the Hudson at 4 positions. For the first time, LED light displays on the Empire State Building were coordinated with the fireworks and music, which was "curated" by Usher. It was a perfect night.

New Yorkers Against Poison
The City did a test of the movement of bacterial spores in the subway system, using harmless bacteria. But lots of folks in 2013 were less fearful of anthrax 2001 style, than of pseudo-threats.
Since I work in a think tank this start-up computer biz in DUMBO, Brooklyn caught my eye.
